uMarch 2005: Water conservation focus of governor's river summit

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Water conservation was the focus at Gov. Rounds’ recent Missouri River Summit Conference Feb. 7 in Sioux Falls.

The conference ended with a vote to submit a resolution to the Corps of Engineers to conserve as much water as possible. Gov. Rounds’ staff was to prepare the resolution for review and signing by Gov. Schweitzer of Montana, Gov. Hoeven of North Dakota, and Gov. Heineman of Nebraska.

A major concern expressed by representatives of Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri is the effect of low flows on power production. There are 18 power plants below Sioux City that rely on the Missouri River for cooling water. Low flows may mean that power production will have to be curtailed.

Howard Paul, executive director of MSAC, attended the meeting. He met with a representative of Missouri, who expressed their along with Louisiana’s concern of lack of sediment in the Mississippi River. MSAC will keep in contact.
