Update: MSAC Gains 501c3 Status
SPRINGFIELD - Organizers are hopeful that gaining 501c3 non-profit status with the Internal Revenue Service will open new funding opportunities for MSAC and enhance public awareness of sediment problems.

Since day one, MSAC has been recognized as a non-profit corporation by the IRS. This class allowed the organization to pursue lobbying on specific legislation, however, it also threw roadblocks in obtaining grants.

With 501c3 status, MSAC would have to limit lobbying activities, but would have better access to many grants, and would have some tax advantages.Organizers found that MSAC’s activities primarily focus on education rather than lobbying. MSAC will continue its education efforts in the region and in Washington, D.C.
