The Missouri Sedimentation Action Coalition is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public and to promoting the intelligent use of all available programs and funds to alleviate the sedimentation-caused problems of the Missouri River main-stem reservoirs.

MSAC was organized in 2001. The coalition actively urges attention to address the accumulating sediment in the Missouri River reservoirs. MSAC maintains contact with federal agencies such as the US Army Corps of Engineers, US Geological Survey, National Park Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, along with state and local agencies and groups.

Membership contributions assist in fueling the message. Membership contributions are the primary source of funds to continue MSAC’s efforts. Limited grant funds have supported MSAC’s educational efforts, more specifically funding research by the Missouri River Institute at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. The research aids in MSAC’s public information message.

Sedimentation is not only a concern for boaters, but for thousands of Americans up and down the river who use electricity, drinking water and support flood control. Flood control averages approximately $500 million per year in benefits and it alone has paid for the dams. Sediment accumulation will ultimately destroy most of that benefit. Sediment already impacts power production. Irrigation and water intakes have been affected already. In many areas, there is no other suitable water source.

MSAC supports managing the dams on a life cycle approach rather than a design life basis. A design life envisions decommissioning the dams at the end of their design life period. Life cycle analysis envisions doing what is necessary to extend the life of the dam as far into the future as possible.

The technology exists to begin addressing the problem. It is not a technical issue. It is a political issue. The current criteria for computing a benefit/cost ratio must be modified or eliminated. The dams and reservoirs are too valuable to lose to sediment. We cannot simply toss the system out when the reservoirs are full of sediment. We must conserve the valuable natural resources of our country. The reservoirs must be sustained for future generations.

Suggested individual membership contributions are $25 annually. Memberships are also available for organizations, businesses and governmental entities.
